The specific recipe recalled is Woody’s raw turkey recipe with the Use by Dates 1/10/2020, 1/12/2020/ and 1/15/2020. Elevated Levels of Vitamin D Detected in Multiple Hill’s Pet Nutrition Recipes

On January 31, 2019, Hill’s Pet Nutrition voluntarily recalled two of their canned dog food recipes due to potentially high levels of vitamin D. On March 20, 2019, they extended their recall to a wider variety of their products due to more testing.

The canned food recipes under investigation are Hill’s Pet Nutrition Prescription Diet and Science Diet Dog Food. See the full list of the affected lots HERE. The brand issued this recall after receiving a complaint from someone in the United States about their dog showing signs of elevated levels of Vitamin D. This initiated a testing of these recipes and Hill’s Pet Nutrition was able to confirm high levels of vitamin D due to a supplier error.

High levels of vitamin D can cause nausea, weakness, loss of appetite, increased urination, increased thirst, excessive drooling and/or weight loss due to the build-up of calcium. Recovery is expected after discontinuing to feed the contaminated product, but it is still recommended to take your pet to a veterinarian for a complete diagnosis to make sure they are completely safe.

Hill’s Pet Nutrition has reassured their customers that they have isolated this contamination and have required their supplier to provide further testing of their ingredients before releasing to their third-party vendors. Additionally, the pet food brand will be implementing additional testing on the ingredients they receive. To read more about this voluntarily recall, click HERE.
